Janice Ann (Liljegren) Riggs

- Janice A.  (Liljegren) Riggs, 85, of Townsend, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester, surrounded by her two daughters and granddaughter, following a short illness.

Born October 7, 1931 in Fitchburg.  She was the daughter of Walter G. Liljegren and Charlotte (Adams) Zbikowski and had lived in Townsend for 27 years.

Jan worked for Prime Tobacco and Prime Value Mart for many years, retiring in 1994.  She was an accomplished pianist and organist for many years.  She played the organ for many different churches in the area.  Her first job as an organist was at the age of fourteen for the Methodist Church in Townsend.  Jan was also a cast member in local theater groups, along with “The Golden Smoothies.”  She was a calendar girl for the Atwood Cuties.  Spending time with family and friends, engaging in crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and traveling to Maine going camping were a few of her favorite pastimes.  She also had a love for birds.

She leaves two daughters, Wendy Whelan of Ormond Beach, FL and Janice Crain and her husband Eddie of Townsend, MA, one brother Warren Peter Liljegren and his wife Annette of Foxboro, MA, two sisters Jessie Manning and Susan Mawer of Maryland and two step-sisters Myrle Jinx Phaneuf of Lunenburg, MA and Mary Parke-Plummer of Leominster, MA; three grandchildren, Sean Blake Sr. of Oxford, MA, Kelly Coyle of Townsend, and Richard Mason of New Ipswich, NH; five great-grandchildren, Sean Jr. and Cameron Blake, and known to Ryan, Kyle, and Kara Coyle as “Te-te,” along with several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her longtime companion, Richard Sampson of 30 years.

A Celebration of   Life will be held  on April 29, 2017 at the V.F.W. in Townsend, from 12- 4 PM . Arrangements by the McGaffigan Funeral Home 37 Main St. Pepperell, MA. 01463. Please see www.mcgaffiganfuneral.com
