Barbara S. Gilchrest of Pepperell, MA, formerly of Hollis, NH, age 102, died at home on March 13, 2016. She was born in Leominster, MA March 2, 1914, daughter of the late Jasper and Alta (Pierce) Sawyer and was the wife of the late Philip W. Gilchrest Sr., who died in 1996.
She spent her early life in Leominster and was a graduate of Leominster High School, later graduating from secretarial school. After marriage to her late husband, they resided in several towns in the Commonwealth, finally relocating to Marlborough, MA. In her working years she had been employed at W.R. Grace in Northborough. After retirement, they resided in Florida for 17 years before relocating to Hollis, NH; she moved to Nashua, NH after her husband's death. She had lived in Pepperell with her daughter the last two years.
Mrs. Gilchrest was a woman who enjoyed sewing and hooking rugs. She was also a member of the Dunstable Grange as well as other Granges in the State and held many offices in the organization.
She is survived by her children, Philip W. Gilchrest Jr. of Nashua, NH, Janice M. Boutotte of Pepperell, MA, Robert W. Gilchrest of Concord, NH and Donald P. Gilchrest of Pembroke, NH; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren; as well as her dog Bella.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10 AM at the Congregational Church of Hollis, 3 Monument Square, Hollis, NH 03049. A visitation will take place Thursday 6-8 PM at the Hamilton-McGaffigan Funeral Home, 37 Main St. (Rte. 113), Pepperell. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster.
