Dr. Stephen Kurland

Dr. Stephen Kurland, of Townsend, Massachusetts, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2024, at the age of 78. He was born and raised in Winthrop, MA. Son of the late Henry Kurland, born in East Boston, MA, and the late Mary Kurland, born in Lynn, MA. Brother of the late Richard Kurland, born in Winthrop, MA.

Stephen graduated from Winthrop High School in 1963. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1968 with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in School Counseling/Psychology. He attended Boston College from 1979 to 1988, earning a Doctorate degree in Education.

From 1968 to 1972, Stephen taught Chemistry and Biology at Lawrence High School in Waterville, ME, where he also coached basketball and track. He was employed at Thayer Hospital in Waterville, ME in biochemical research from 1969 to 1972. From 1973 until 2006, Stephen worked as a School Psychologist and Special Education Administrator for Lowell, MA Public Schools, retiring after 33 years. From 1988 until 2021, he worked as a Psychologist/Psychotherapist at Arbour Counseling Services in Lowell, retiring after 33 years.

Stephen will be remembered for his deep love and dedication to his family. He worked two full-time jobs simultaneously for 18 years to provide for his family. He enjoyed playing and watching several sports, including basketball, baseball, football, hockey, ping pong, tennis, and candlepin bowling. He also coached his sons’ youth basketball teams and enjoyed spending summers with his family at Totem Pole Park on Lake Ossipee, NH.

Stephen leaves behind his beloved wife of 50 years, Gail Kurland, of Townsend, MA; his daughter Lisa Gennari, spouse Jim, of Sudbury, MA; his son Jason Kurland, spouse Rebecca, of Tolland, CT; his late son Joseph Kurland of Townsend, MA; his son Adam Kurland, spouse Jacqueline, of Pepperell, MA; his daughter Rachel Kurland, fiancé Will, of Townsend, MA; and his 9 grandchildren.

Private services will be held for the family.
