Gerald W. "Gerry" Simmons of Dunstable passed away on March 22, 2015, after a brief illness at Lowell General Hospital with his family by his side. He had just celebrated his 91st birthday having been born on March 5, 1924, in Salem, MA, the son of the late William H. and Ada L. (Grinnel) Simmons. He had been a resident of Dunstable since 1939.
He was married to the late Rena F. (Shea) Simmons. They had celebrated 60 years of marriage before her passing in October, 2010.
Gerry worked for the former Suburban Dairy of North Chelmsford, MA, having started as a home delivery route man and working his way up to general manager before the company was sold.
Gerry served the Town of Dunstable in many capacities and was honored in 2013 for his 61 years of service. He held many elected and appointed positions, most notably as Sergeant of the Police Department for 35 years before his retirement in 1989. He also served at various time as Constable, Highway Commissioner, Superintendent of the Water Dept., Election Warden, and was currently a member of the Council on Aging. As a Police Officer he held membership in the North Middlesex County Police Association, serving as Treasurer for over 25 years.
Gerry was a member and congregant of the First Congregational Church in Billerica.
For over 72 years Gerry was a member and Past Master of Dunstable Grange #31 as well as a Past Master of Middlesex North (now Minuteman) Pomona Grange #16. At the time of his passing he was a Special Deputy of the Massachusetts State Grange. He held membership for nearly 30 years, and was a Past Master of Tahattawan Masonic Lodge AF&AM of Littleton, MA and the Aleppo Temple Shrine.
Gerry is survived by his three sons, Gerald W., Jr. and wife Linda E. (Paavola) Simmons of Chelmsford; Harold K. and wife Joan M. (Roshelli) Simmons of Dunstable; David F. Simmons of Dunstable with whom he resided; and grandson Benjamin H. Simmons and Christi E. Sawyer of Townsend. He was predeceased by his Sister, Devona C. (Simmons) Hingey of Waltham.
Gerry's Family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of the Lowell General Hospital for their care and compassion in his final days.
