John "Jack" Evans Dow

DUNSTABLE - John “Jack” Evans Dow, age 89, of Dunstable, MA, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on May 11th. Jack was married to Mary (Monahan) Dow for 58 years before her passing in 2018. He was the son of the late Hazel (Piper) Flack and the late Wilfred Dow. 

Jack was born via a midwife in Dunstable, MA, on April 28, 1937, where what is today, the Dunstable Post Office. Dunstable was Jack’s Happy Place. He was a lifelong Dunstable resident residing on Main Street. He attended the Dunstable School System and graduated from Lowell High School. In his younger years, Jack was a builder and would use his hands and creativity to build beautiful homes in Dunstable, MA. He was also a volunteer firefighter who worked for Pop Savil at the Dunstable Fire Station. In his later years, Jack worked for Brox Paving Company paving the way for others until his retirement after 40 plus years of service. 

Jack was a kind soul who would go out of his way to help anyone who needed him. He helped build the Dunstable tennis courts and ballfield behind West Auto Repair. In a world of material things, he took pleasure in the simple life and enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and pet chickens. He loved gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Jack owned land up in Fitzwilliam, NH, and enjoyed the hobby of lumberjacking. He also loved classic cars and owned a 1941 Chevy Sedan Deluxe that he would drive to car shows. 

Jack is survived by his son, John E. “Jack” Dow, and a daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Carlson, both from Dunstable; a brother, James and his wife, Mary Dow, of Dunstable MA; a sister-in-law, Rhoda Dow, of Shirley, MA, three grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his sister, Sandra Vincent. 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 19th from 5-8 pm at the McGaffigan Funeral Home, 37 Main St., (Rte. 113) Pepperell, MA. A Funeral Service will be held at the Dunstable Evangelical Congregational Church at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20th, followed by Burial in Central Cemetery in Dunstable, MA.
