Frederick Henry Messina

At age 82 Frederick H. Messina passed away peacefully while at home, surrounded by his loving family on October 17th, 2018.  Fred was born in Medford, MA on December 23rd, 1935.  As a highly active member of the Boy Scouts he achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.  Fred graduated from Medford High Vocational School in 1953.



He served in the United States Air Force from 1957 – 1960.  While based out of Otis Air Force Base in Massachusetts, Fred performed operations on a Texas Tower Radar station off the east coast.  Following his military service, Fred embarked upon a career in the trade occupations.  Over the course of his career Fred was employed at General Electric, co-founded a small home improvement business, and began a string of facilities management positions at Infrared, Eikonix, and Genzyme. He retired in 2004 at the age of 69.


Fred was a competitive and highly awarded target shooter, beginning as a teenager with the Melrose Smallbore Rifle Club, and during many years with the North Reading Rifle League.  He was interested in a diverse number of hobbies including photography, woodworking, leather crafts, camping, fishing, boating, and scuba diving as a founding member of the Massachusetts Aqua Club in the 50’s and 60’s.  Fred greatly enjoyed his annual fishing trip to Whisperwood Lodge in Belgrade, ME that became a Father/Son family tradition.


Fred is survived by his wife Carolyn (Bradley) Messina, with whom he enjoyed a marriage of over 60 years;  his children, Scott Messina and his wife Regina, Steven Messina and his partner Elena Pinjenina, Christine Searle and her husband Ken, and Kevin Messina and his husband James R. Brown, Jr.; his grandchildren, Tanya, Nick, Eli, Irina and Riley.  He is also survived by his brother, Richard Messina and his wife Carole, and his sisters, Eleanor Bashian, Janet Brogan, and Cheryl Silvestri; and his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Lois and Jim Hendricks, Shirley Movsesian, Dorothy and Richard Alger, Floyd and Audrey Bradley, Priscilla Law, Reta McDonough, Sylvia and Robert Baumeister, Donald Bradley, and Theodore Keizer.


A Memorial Service to celebrate and appreciate the life of Frederick H. Messina will take place on Saturday, October 27th, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral of the Pines, 10 Hale Hill Road, Rindge, NH.  Directions can be found here - https://www.cathedralofthepines.org/directions.
