Handel "Matt" Matley, Jr.

Handel “Matt” Matley Jr., 85, of Pepperell, MA passed peacefully on June 18th, 2022 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH after an unexpected medical occurrence.

Handel was born on August 29th, 1936 in Lowell, Massachusetts. He attended Franklin Technical School in Boston where he obtained his certification in 1955. In 1958, Matley Plumbing and Heating was established, which still remains in Pepperell, MA as the oldest plumbing and heating company in town. Although Handel retired in 2018, people could still find him hanging around the shop answering questions for his long-term patrons and friends.

Handel and his wife Maude recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on May 1st. First and foremost, family, church and friends were Handel's life. Handel and Maude were very active in their faith, so much so that in 1986, they built a church, Holy Spirit, in Pepperell, MA.

Handel was a member of the William North Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. and was raised to Master Mason in 1960. He was a lifetime member of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts, the York Rite, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Lowell. He received the Veterans Medal of 50 years of Service to Masonry in 2010.  He was a member of the Pilgrim Commandery No. 9 in Lowell MA, where he held the title of Eminent Commander. In addition, he was a member of the Ahasuerus Council in Lowell, reaching its highest rank. Upon retirement, Handel’s hobbies and interests included his love of birds, nature-watching and his pipe.

Handel's legacy and love of family is survived by his loving wife, Maude, daughters Lynn Matley-Tobin of Ocala, FL, Jaki Darling of MA, Cheryl and husband Jerry Kuczynski of Royal Palm, FL, and Susan Brennen of GA, and stepsons Richard McQuaide and wife Johanne of TN, Gary McQuaide and wife Jean (Soucy) of Milford, NH.

Handel is also survived by his many grandchildren: Robert Tobin, Jamie and wife Thea Darling, Jonathan Darling, Alicia, Elizabeth, and Matthew Dubreuil, Kevin and wife Amber Kuczynski, Michael and wife Carissa Kuczynski, Brian Kuczynski, Scott Kuczynski and Leandre Brennen, Richard and Kristen McQuaide, David and wife Micaela McQuaide, Mary Maude McQuaide and Andy Beauchamin, and Haley McQuaide, Danielle and wife Kate Tedford, Joel Soucy and Lance Corporal Hannah Soucy, USMC. Four grandsons hold the honor of Eagle Scout. Also survived by great-grandchildren Daniel, Logan, Jackson, Zoe, Peyton, Amelia, Eric, Samuel, Nicholas, Dakota, Sophia, Myles and Grayson.

Handel is survived by siblings Arlene Dillon of MA, Robert and Helen Matley of FL and several nieces and nephews.

Handel’s funeral service will be held Monday, June 27th, 2022 at Grace Lutheran Church, 130 Spitbrook Rd, Nashua, NH at 10:30 a.m. A viewing will precede the worship service from 9:30-10:30 am. Following the ceremony, the family invites all to the church's banquet facility to share happy memories and stories of Handel. A private burial service will be held Tuesday, June 28th, 2022 for the immediate family at Association Cemetery, Pepperell. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes and encourages donations to be made to Community Hospice House, Home Health & Hospice Care, 7 Executive Park Drive Merrimack, NH 03054 ( www.hhhc.org ).
