James F. “Diamond” Murphy, 74, of Dorchester, MA died on May 17th, 2022 following a period of declining health. He was born in Boston on September 2, 1947 son of the late James Francis and Rita (McCarthy) Murphy. He is survived by six siblings: William M. Murphy, Thomas P. Murphy and Lawrence J. Murphy of Pepperell, Kevin B. Murphy of Merrimack, NH and Jean Connolly and Cathleen A. Walsh of Pepperell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
James served his country in the US Army where he achieved the rank of Sergeant and served three tours of duty in Vietnam. Following his military service, he became a career firefighter for the Boston Fire Department.
James enjoyed travel, gardening, genealogy, mentoring, and had a special interest in the East Timor Genocide. He played an instrumental role in bringing this to the attention of the United States government.
Not only does James leave a behind a legacy of service and family, but a multitude of friends whom he mentored during his life in Dorchester.
Visiting hours will be held in the McGaffigan Funeral Home, 37 Main St. (Rte. 113) Pepperell, MA on Monday, May 23rd from 4 – 7 p.m. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Parish worshiping at St. Joseph Church, 28 Tarbell St., Pepperell, MA on Tuesday, May 24th at 10 a.m. Burial St. Joseph Cemetery, Pepperell. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
