Melissa Sue McKenzie

On October 27th, 2022, Melissa Sue McKenzie passed away from a heart attack during a brief admittance to Nashoba Valley Medical Center. Melissa had a number of health complications in the last few years which she fought bravely to overcome despite numerous setbacks.

Melissa was born on April 29th, 1953 the daughter of the late Corydon Ford Heard, Jr and Jean (Hansen) Heard in Little Rock, Arkansas. She lived in Manhattan during her childhood before relocating to Holliston, Ma with her parents. She attended Fitchburg State College where she met her husband, the late Kevin McKenzie. They relocated to Groton, MA in 1978 and raised their family. She is survived by her daughter Amanda and her husband Hetram Verma, son Corey and his wife Megan McKenzie, a brother Corydon Ford Heard III and a sister Rebecca Oken. Her five grandchildren include Mia, Maeve, Karishma, Aaryan and Corey Jr who will miss their Binney/Grammy Kitty.

She held a Masters in Early Childhood Education and had retired from her career with Valley Collaborative as an Intensive Special Education teacher. Melissa loved her job and had many former parents who stayed in close contact with her after their children had moved on from her room.

Melissa thoroughly enjoyed decorating for all the holidays but most of all Halloween. It is likely no coincidence the universe came for her during her most favorite season.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. It brings the family comfort to know that many people are also mourning her loss. There will be no formal services. The family is opting for a celebration of Melissa’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the non-profit Special Books by Special Kids at https://sbsk.org /
